Lapis Lazuli - symbolism of the stone

Lapis Lazuli - symbolism of the stone

Lapis lazuli is a light blue semiprecious stone sometimes dull with white and golden stains. The overall structure of the color of lapis lazuli may suggest an analogy with the starry sky. But to see an image like that is possible only in the sunlight, while in a dark room lapis lazuli immediately darkens. It represents the planet Venus and Uranus in the sign of land. In the seventeenth century Armenian manuscripts reported that only this precious stone for 10 days "can be on fire, without losing its color." Known since 4 AC in Assyria, Babylon and Egypt lapis lazuli has been considered one of the most expensive stones, and it has been used as a measure of value. In ancient Egypt a beetle carved from lapis lazuli was a sacred beetle of turning of the sun, a symbol of immortality.

The beetle made in gold was considered a talisman that ensured long life and prosperity. According to the biblical legend of Moses, Ten Commandments were engraved on slabs of lapis lazuli. On the same mineral it has been engraved a figure of an Egyptian goddess of truth, Maat, that served as a symbol for the supreme judges, the priests of Egypt. The history of this mineral is associated, for the most part, with the creation of architectural buildings. Thus, in the nineteenth century, there were built two pillars of lapis lazuli of the great St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. And even before that, in ancient Egypt, the covering that was made of lapis lazuli decorated the statue of one of the leaders of the state. The color of most valuable artists of past centuries was ultramarine blue because it is not particularly faded in the sun. At that time lapis lazuli had important role, because it was added into dye powder to give color to the ultramarine pigment. This derived color was used by the greatest artists of past centuries.

Lapis lazuli is a stone of sincerity and friendship. This mineral is also called the "stone of heaven."

With its magical properties, lapis lazuli symbolizes love, and it is a talisman of lovers. Lapis lazuli gives happiness in love and peace. It provides good luck to all those who are eager to reach new goals and achievements. It is believed that lapis lazuli helps those who suffer from insomnia, allergies, skin diseases and rheumatism. It is also believed that this stone may also be useful in the pathology of the spine. It is used for epilepsy and rheumatism. Its use is indicated to those who had nervous breakdowns. It can be worn by all the signs of the zodiac in a ring or in a silver or gold pendant.
